DeleteHaving the take that Audition is misogynist just strikes me as a complete inability to understand movies. The romcoms that would take this premise and have the couple genuinely fall in love at the end - those movies are misogynist. Miike frames his bachelorette audition as a fun little game so convincingly you start thinking to yourself “good on you for getting back out there!” Because that’s how years of misogynist romcoms have trained us to think about these manipulative games. Audition does it so well that you almost forget that he’s giving false hope to dozens of women about a career opportunity just so that he can get his rocks off. And then Miike punishes him so much for what he did that it dares you to say to yourself “come on man, boys will be boys… what he did wasn’t THAT bad”. But it’s misogynist because the subservient young virgin wife he wanted turns out to be a nightmare? It’s not saying “man, women be crazy and can’t take a joke”, it’s saying “if you think women are toys you can play with, you deserve everything that’s coming to you.”
ReplyDeleteIt’s a damn masterpiece. And wow, has it aged well since everything about Weinstein came out.
Goddamn I hate film-twitter.
Amazing ep as always. Patrick, you’ve convinced me to venture back into the Poohniverse.
The Poohniverse awaits!!
DeleteSh1t, i got the 4k a couple of weeks ago, it's next in the pile, but something came up and didn't watch any movies in the last couple of days
ReplyDeleteBeen a good SMM so far, but I do feel like I've already blown through a lot of the big stuff I had been saving up for this month (Backrooms, Obsession, and a few others). Haven't watched Evil Dead Burn yet, but have yet to hear any positive impressions of that one.
ReplyDeleteBone Face was an interesting find. The concept was maybe a little stronger than the execution. I continue to be amazed scrolling through the Horror movies on Prime how many no-budget movies just seem to materialize on there. Feels like there's a cheap movie camera out there that includes a "Upload to Prime Video" button on it or something.
Just to avoid confusion, Bone Face was on YouTube, not Prime.

ReplyDeleteSo glad you guys covered this for Scary Movie Month! This has been my number one most requested movie for the podcast. Audition is my “favorite” horror film in the sense that I think it’s genuinely the best horror film I’ve ever seen, even if its intensity makes it a lot less rewatchable than most.
I really love how restrained Takashi Miike is here. The first half gives me way more of a quiet Kiyoshi Kurosawa vibe (Cure, Pulse) than Miike’s usual kinetic and gore heavy style. There is something about the opening with the '90s soft focus while they are fishing that fills me with nostalgia.
My only real critique, and this applies to the book as well, is the dog. I read that she is even more explicitly cruel to the dog in Ryu Murakami's original novel. Miike was smart to tone it down in the film to make her more sympathetic, however, I think it would better convey the point of the film to remove it entirely or by even doing the opposite and have her be incredibly caring towards the dog. By having her be so cruel towards the dog in the novel it makes you feel more “oh she is just crazy” in an American Psycho sort of way which gets further from the intended point I believe the author is trying to make.
I have a slightly different take where I do think that she is very much evil, but kind of the personification of a sociopathic evil created by the culture and the protagonist is the mirrored male version of that. At its core its a “hurt people, hurt people” tale - but on both sides that doesn’t give an excuse for violence or manipulation as the effects and implication of that are far reaching
I also wish I could have experienced this totally blind without having the "villain” twist spoiled beforehand, but it's a masterpiece nonetheless.
Would love to see more J-Horror on the pod!
What a wonderful conversation of a movie I ain't seen since I was 15, yikes, and revisited tonight. Yoo fellows smurt. And I'd love more international movie episodes.
