  1. The (small) problem I have with movies like Psycho, or Jaws, or Exorcist, is I've seen them a bunch, but they're also mentioned in every 'best of list', or scenes shown in compilations. And I get it, we want to show them to the new generations, making sure they know the classics. But for me, I grow tired of reading about them.

  2. I don’t know if it’s just that Patrick has ruined my brain over the 14 years I’ve been listening to this show, but I one HUNDRED percent agree about both Psycho and Halloween. I’ve never seen the Psycho remake, but I’m all about Patrick’s decision to open a horror marathon with the Zombie Halloween and I probably put 4 as my favourite Halloween. The more unhinged Loomis becomes, the more I enjoy the series. To me, even from the first movie, Myers isn’t pure evil or the shark from jaws. He has a motive. He’s heading back to his hometown. He’s human. Loomis sounds like a madman to me even in the first movie, so by the time he’s pointing a gun at an 8 year old and screaming “NOOOOOO!” at the end of 4, I’m all in.

With Psycho, my favourite thing in the whole movie is the psychiatrists explanation of Bates at the end - I find it so entertaining. That’s the rough-around-the-edges of Psycho. I also genuinely wonder how the twist fooled people. I know I can’t separate the years and years of similar movie twists since, but the moment we first hear Bates mother speak it seems so obvious to me that it’s all in Norman’s head. I think, but I’m not sure, that I cottoned on to this when I first saw it as a kid. Everything about the way these sequences are staged just screams out that this is all Norman. I just don’t think Hitchcock hides this twist very well. The twist of killing Marion off, though - that’s an all timer and I’m surprised more movies haven’t borrowed this.

I know, I know, Psycho is a masterpiece, and I’m also broken.

  3. Re Franchises, a few years ago I was convinced you were going to do Wrong Turn. I think that was the year you posted an image from Saw every single day, so I don’t know how I predicted Wrong Turn. Could be fun. There are like 2 and a half good movies there, so you could do worse.

  4. Just a thunk, J-horror and remakes? Off dome...The Ring, The Grudge, One Missed Call, Pulse, and the one with Jennifer Connelly. And I think Ed Burns is somehow in One Missed Call remake. And of course Naomi Watts, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Bill Pullman? Brian Cox?

    Just a thunk

  5. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with not being able to connect with the consensus “greatest movies of all time.” I can appreciate the craftsmanship of Vertigo but it has always left me feeling bored and incredulous with the premise. The great thing about a director who’s made so many movies, like Hitch, is that there are so many opportunities to find the film of his that most reaches you.

I know I come to F This Movie not because I think this is where I’ll get the USC film school education I couldn’t afford. I come for the discussions you have with all the contributors that I cannot hear anywhere else. Because you all have interesting perspective and because I like what I like.

    all that and Mummy kid.
