Junesploitation 2026 Day 12: Kung Fu!

  1. SISTER STREET FIGHTER: HANGING BY A THREAD (1974, dir. Kazuhiko Yamaguchi)

Now this is exploitation! In the second film of the Sister Street Fighter series, Koryu Lee (Etsuko Shihomi) returns to being a bad-ass to find a Hong Kong acquaintance kidnapped by Yakuza for several nefarious purposes. Following the trail to Japan, Lee fights her way through the gang without any regard for a coherent plot. Things come up and lead to more action. Things also get sleazy. The influences of the kung fu films and spaghetti westerns are there to see, but this is unmistakably a product of the wild Japanese exploitation boom of the period. Etsuko Shihomi, nineteen years old when the film was made, is the epitome of cool dishing out punishment to her foes. Glad I picked up the Arrow set of the films during the Barnes & Noble sale earlier this year.
