Woo Hoo! An episode dedicated to my absolute #1 favorite movie of all time!!!! Orange Whips for all!!!!!! Great episode sirs! Patrick: so glad the movie played great for you this viewing! JB: I ADORED your stories of connection with this movie and have never been more jealous in my life..wow dude..just wow (missing the Poplar Creek performance has been a lifelong regret. The destruction of Poplar Creek makes me angrier than i can state to this very day).
A few rando tidbits for Blues Brothers fans:
* As one obsessed with any/all movie extras, i regularly look for new information on this film. I HIGHLY suggest a relatively recent book titled "The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic" by Daniel DeVise. Its a great read that tracks Dan and John's separate paths and then the creation of the movie.
* Two Life Quests for me: #1) Dan Akroyds original script was HUGE and as a joke he put it in the binding of an old phonebook. Its was referred to as Scriptatron GL-9000. Ive been searching for years. Even got a hold of DeVise who said even he only got to see some of it. #2) the full original roadshow cut of the movie. Longer than the current extended cut. Sadly likely long lost to studios discarding film and extras after the final edit locked.
* Danny/John wanted BB King in the first movie but was told by his agent no-go. BB found out later and was pissed and thus was in the sequel. Also..i just found out that Muddy Waters was supposed to be in the Maxwell St scene but got sick around time of production and was replaced by John Lee Hooker. Obviously John Lee is incredible but it saddens me so that we didnt also get some of the blues great Waters in the movie!
* For the SUPER fans out there, a tie in book came out around the time of the movie called Blues Brothers Private. Written by Johns wife Judy and a mutual friend it is like a fake file folder filled with documents from Jake and Elwoods life. Its out of print so may be costly but a pretty cool movie tie in.
* Kunider: I did pick up the recent comic sequel penned by Dans daughter and Judys son. Its heart is in the right place but i didnt particularly connect with it. However along with its release was a Blues Brothers Lost Recordings album that features an ok sounding, never before released, live recording.
* Speaking of live recording: theres some realllllly good live footage on youtube from the Winterland 1978 Blues Brothers concert.
* There have been two Blues Brothers conventions held at the actual Joliet prison site (now a historical tour location). I was fortunate enough to attend the 2nd a few years ago. Fans from all over the world came to celebrate this movie and blues music many many decades after its release.

Agreed on the comic. As a mega fan of the movie, i had to get it, but it's hard to make a musical in comic form.
