  1. I had some thoughts about the discourse around “Wuthering Heights” having read the book and not seen the new movie.
One thing that confuses me is how certain critics seem to be overly sure that Heathcliff was black in the novel. This just seems inaccurate; granted Heathcliff was not “white” in the novel but that’s because what a white person was didn’t include Irish, Italian or Czech nationalities.
I don’t have a problem if Andrea Arnold wants to cast Heathcliff as a black person but that’s more of an artistic interpretation than a fact of the book.
The other thing I was thinking is I think Fennel is realizing that “Wuthering Heights” is a difficult book to adapt. Even the Olivier version is while considered a good film, not considered a great adaptation.
It’s equally resistant to attempts to deconstruct it as well. Bunuel did his own adaptation which was an attempt to troll the material but ended up being one of his dullest films.
