TIFF 2024 Wrap-up and Ranking

As I write this, it is the final day of the festival. This piece will be my final diagnostic on TIFF 2024. I have made my rankings of what I’ve seen. I have taken a day off as yesterday I reached my goal of seeing 26 movies in 10 days (27 if you include a non-festival screening of what I’ve been calling Beetle2ce, a bad movie).

It’s day seven as I write this. I’ve seen 21 movies. The days are starting to bleed into each other. I had lunch with a friend yesterday afternoon and it feels like that was a week ago. The movies are rhyming. There were turtles in two or three movies I’ve seen (maybe one was a frog actually). I am slightly fatigued -- very fatigued. I’m making odd decisions. I bought a 2 liter bottle of Sprite Zero today, having never drank Sprite Zero in my life. All that said, I’m having so much fun. Seeing this many movies in a week? In my own city, no less? I can go home and see my cats at the end of the day? I’m a lucky guy.

TIFF 2024 Review: THE LIFE OF CHUCK

Mike Flanagan’s latest Stephen King adaptation is not what you might expect from another collaboration between two horror masters. These guys are known for going there and getting dark. In The Life of Chuck, they look for light in the darkness. The result is a confidently uncynical drama about death, the apocalypse, and the moments that build us into the people we are. It took my breath away.

This is my first year covering the Toronto Film Festival with a press pass, but I am no stranger to this land. I worked for the festival as a production assistant for nine years. With that job came the perks of being able to watch as many movies as I could. My record is 25 movies in one festival. I plan to break that record.
