Anyone who has known me for more than 10 minutes knows that Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies. No matter how many times I watch it, and I watch it a lot, I discover new things to love about it. My wife and I caught it on cable a few weeks ago, so naturally we left it on. It was on this viewing that Simon Pegg’s performance stuck out to me in ways it never has before and it left me wondering why.

On Friday, August 2nd, Mike Pomaro and I went to see a double feature of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz at the glorious Music Box Theatre in Chicago. Edgar Wright was in attendance to introduce the movies and he brought Simon Pegg and Nick Frost along for an extremely funny Q&A. Care to relive the evening with us? 

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (April 13)

I know you're itching for the latest trailerz, but I have a few questions first. Has anyone else seen those WeatherTech commercials advertising vehicle floor liners? The one where the guy points a red light at a car's carpet and the narrator tries to convince us that the mats are "laser measured" (I don't even know what that means!)? HOW IS THIS COMPANY IN BUSINESS? Is America's demand for all-weather plastic floor coverings that out of control? Am I oblivious to the hundreds of thousands of car interiors whose carpets are RUINED by snow, spilled coffee and (I'm assume) semen? Don't commercials and sponsorships cost a lot of money? Are floor mats from the car's manufacturer really that expensive? Or it because they're made in America, and I'll be dead in the cold, cold ground before I put my boots on plastic liners made in China? I get the feeling that this business is propped up by some insane Howard Hughes-like molded-plastic magnate who will not stop dumping money into this crazy scheme (probably the brainchild of his deadbeat nephew) until he's buried beneath a pile of his own urine jars. I'm just so confused, is what I'm saying!

On one hand, I should love this movie. It stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogan, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jane Lynch, Jo Lo Truglio, David Koechner, Jeffrey Tambor and Gilbert Gottfried (Dracula/Dice/Groucho!). It's also directed by the guy who gave us Superbad and Adventureland. On the other hand, it doesn't look very good! I hope I'm wrong! Please be good!

I was going to include the full-length trailer for this movie (you can see it here), but the teaser trailer (above) is SO much cooler. Perhaps it's because I'm a boy trapped inside a slightly smaller boy's body, but I thought this looked way rad. I'm also a sucker for effective/obscure songs in previews, and "The Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky Turned Black," by Icelandic musician Johann Johannsson fits the bill (see also: "Creep" by Scala and Kolacny Brothers).
